Heat pump servicing Rotorua
If we fitted your heat pump, we'll keep it running through the sulphur and the damp. Booked a service, or thinking about a new install? Give us a call.
Servicing means cleaning filters and coils, checking gas pressure and drainage, and catching wear early. In Rotorua the geothermal air corrodes coils faster, so a yearly service matters more here than most places. We service the heat pumps we installed.
Why Rotorua air is harder on heat pumps
The hydrogen sulphide that gives Rotorua its smell doesn't just sit in the air. It reacts with the copper and aluminium in a heat pump's coils, and over years that quietly eats them away. Add lake humidity off the water and you've got the two things heat pumps hate most working on your outdoor unit around the clock.
It's worse the closer you sit to the geothermal fringes and lakeside spots like Ohinemutu, Tikitere and the edges of Whakarewarewa. That's why we push corrosion-resistant blue-fin and gold-fin coils here, and why a regular heat pump maintenance visit does more for you in Rotorua than it would in a drier town. Skip it and the coil corrodes out of sight until the unit starts struggling.
What a heat pump service actually covers
A proper service is more than a wipe of the filters. We work through the whole unit so nothing corrodes or clogs its way into a bigger bill:
- Clean and check the indoor filters and coil
- Wash down the outdoor coil and clear the fins of sulphur build-up
- Check refrigerant pressure and look for leaks
- Clear the drain and condensate line so it doesn't back up
- Test heating and cooling output and listen for worn bearings or fan noise
We service the heat pumps we installed
Straight up: we only service and repair the heat pumps we put in ourselves. We don't take on other companies' installs. When we've done the heat pump installation, we know the unit, how it's mounted and how it was set up, so we can look after it properly and stand behind it.
If someone else fitted your unit and it's playing up, the honest fix is often a fresh, right-sized install rather than us guessing at another crew's work. We're happy to talk that through and quote it. Right sizing beats brand or grunt every time, and it's the thing a lot of cheap installs get wrong.
The filter clean you can do yourself
Between services, pop the front cover on your indoor unit and pull the filters every month or two. A quick rinse under the tap and a dry in the shade keeps airflow up, especially in older under-insulated homes where the heat pump runs hard through cold Rotorua mornings. A blocked filter makes the unit work harder for less heat, which shows up on your power bill.
The outdoor coil, gas and drainage are ours to handle. If you're weighing up a bigger system for a sealed newer build, or want to compare a wall unit against ducted heat pumps Rotorua homes suit, the heat pump installation cost page lays out the numbers. Where money's tight, the Warmer Kiwi Homes grant can cover up to 80% of a heat pump, capped, if you qualify. You apply through EECA directly.

Heat pump servicing questions
How often should a heat pump be serviced?
Once a year is the right call in Rotorua. The geothermal air and lake humidity corrode coils and clog fins faster than in drier towns, so an annual service catches build-up and wear before it becomes a repair. If you're near the lake or a geothermal fringe, a yearly clean matters even more.
Why is my heat pump not heating properly?
Usually one of a few things: a blocked filter or coil starving it of airflow, low refrigerant from a slow leak, or a corroded outdoor coil that can't shift heat properly. In older Rotorua homes it can also just be an undersized unit fighting a cold, leaky house. We can test pressures and airflow to find which it is.
Does regular servicing make a heat pump last longer?
Yes. Clean coils and filters, correct gas pressure and clear drainage all mean the unit isn't straining, and less strain is less wear. In a corrosive spot like Rotorua, regular servicing that keeps the coils clean is the single biggest thing that adds years to a heat pump.
