The Warmer Kiwi Homes grant for heat pumps in Rotorua

The Warmer Kiwi Homes grant covers up to 80% of the cost of an approved heater, including a heat pump, capped by EECA. You apply through EECA, your home must be built before 2008, and you need to meet income or location rules and have the right insulation.

What the Warmer Kiwi Homes grant is

Warmer Kiwi Homes is run by EECA, the government's energy agency. It helps lower-income homeowners get a fixed heater put into the main living area, and a heat pump is one of the approved options. The grant covers up to 80% of the cost, with a cap set by EECA, so you still pay a share yourself.

We're straight about one thing here: we're not an EECA-registered provider. That means we don't deliver the grant-funded install itself. EECA works through its own approved installers. If you're eligible and want the grant to pay most of it, you go through them. We can still quote and fit a heat pump the normal way if you're not eligible or don't want to wait on the process.

Applying for the grant through EECA

You apply directly to EECA, not to an installer. It's worth checking the details on their website before you commit to anything, because the rules and the cap can change.

The rough shape of it looks like this:

• Confirm your home was built before 1 January 2008.
• Check you meet the income or area rules, usually a Community Services Card or living in a targeted lower-income area.
• Make sure your ceiling and underfloor insulation is up to standard, or get that sorted first.
• Apply through EECA and use one of their approved providers for the install.

Why the grant matters in western Rotorua

Cold, damp Plateau winters are hard on older homes, and a warm, dry living area is a health thing as much as a comfort thing. A lot of the pre-2008 ex-state and mid-century timber houses through Fordlands, Western Heights, Selwyn Heights, Utuhina and Pukehangi are exactly the sort of homes this grant was built for.
